Surprise Stove

There’s this saying that having fun and being happy is qualified as productive. And how we embrace this statement! Back in last month’s end year frenzy, we got really busy at having fun: the foods and feast got back on the street in one fine Sunday morning with companion from Kafe Halaman, just celebrating their birthday last November.

Ah... the triumph of subtle vandalism

Also this surprisingly suitable-for-a-morning-chew tomato and basil bruschetta with cheese from our first new-found international cook (no, wait. He’s a stranded student from Poland) Damian. He cooked with great care over details he got overcooked under the sun himself. Big thanks, Damian!

On november 12, our two beloved enthusiastic architecture media comrades, Jong Arsitek! and Fivefootway was doing our honor in holding a warm Surprise Stove at Haji Lane, Singapore.

We had been previously informed about the nauseating bureaucracy in Singapore for holding even such small street feast, but hey, they’ve nailed everything out! Our special thanks to Tanti and Adib whom efforts has encourage such affecting result. Kudos!

Also, loved their self-formulated tagline on the Singapore Edition of Surprise Stove: Enjoy Life, Go Slow, Eat Together.

High fiveee!

SURPRISE STOVE is a one-day food festival exploring issues of public spaces in the city through the wisdom of street-inspired food culture. A movement that started on the streets of Indonesia, the guerrilla-style event brings chefs and cooking enthusiasts to cook in the city who will then give away their culinary creations to the public for free. In this special edition of SURPRISE STOVE presented by KeukenBdg, jongArsitek!, and FIVEFOOTWAY, the festival explores urban conditions unique to Singapore. In a country with plenty of well-designed formal public spaces, where are the ‘alternative’ ones? In a country known for its discipline and order, where are the best places for informal and impromptu gatherings to take place? In a fast-paced city like Singapore, where are the pockets of spaces where one can truly live and enjoy the city? For one day, Haji Lane, a unique enclave in the heart of Singapore with an eclectic mix of fashion and lifestyle shops, will be turned into a public urban kitchen where the community can gather on a lazy Saturday afternoon to enjoy good company and good food. Take a stroll and window-shop along the street, cruise the historic Kg. Glam area in the two-wheelers, smell the spices in the air and enjoy the slow life at Haji Lane. Surprise Stove Singapore – enjoy life, go slow, eat together.

Surprise Stove #3: Braga Park(ing) Day with Chef Masbro, JongArsitek!, We Made This Stuff & Maicih

liberty, equality, fraternity—or Picnic!
